Important rules regarding age eligibility, cutoff dates, and certificates
In almost all Indian government examinations (UPSC, SSC, Railway, Banking, State PSCs), only the Matriculation / Secondary School Examination (10th Class) Certificate is accepted as valid legal proof of date of birth. Hospital birth certificates or Aadhaar cards are generally not accepted for age verification if they contradict the 10th marksheet.
Under UPSC and SSC recruitment conventions:
• If the examination is held in the first half of the calendar year (Jan–Jun), the cutoff date is usually 1st January of that year.
• If the examination is held in the second half of the calendar year (Jul–Dec), the cutoff date is usually 1st August of that year.
Government recruitment systems are strictly automated. If you exceed the maximum permitted age on the cutoff date by even a single day (unless covered under valid category relaxation), your application will be automatically rejected during scrutiny or document verification.
No. As per current Central Government (DoPT) policies, candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) are granted a 10% vacancy reservation and fee relaxation, but no relaxation in upper age limit is applicable.
For Ex-Servicemen, the period of military service rendered is deducted from their actual age on the cutoff date. If the resulting age does not exceed the maximum prescribed age limit by more than 3 years, the candidate is eligible.
